Perfection is great! Right?
It’s a great standard to strive for, but it’s a misleading pursuit because you’ll ultimately never reach it.
For us Creatives, its especially hard to let go of this because we love spending time to make things perfect. We mistakenly tie our ego and worthiness to it.
Unfortunately, this works against us, especially when we are running a business. Striving for perfection does not allow us to let go and delegate. Which won’t allow us to grow and build a team, nor will it provide us sanity for our work-life balance. You can see the downward spiral that this creates. So unless you are happy working away on your own and taking the entire workload, I would recommend a perceptual shift.
This leads me to Mastery.
Although the intention is the same as Perfection, Mastery suggests a very different process and purpose. Focusing on Mastery allows you to always improve while still pursuing excellence.
So, Mastery vs Perfection?
When I reflect on my journey as a Designer and Business Owner, a lot of the wisdom that I’ve collected over the years is from analyzing my failures. Under every failure is a piece of gold to be discovered. But many business owners sweep that under the rug and never look back because emotionally, it’s too hard to look at their failures. This is especially true for the Perfectionist in us. Perfection expects us to be well, just that. It does not allow us to analyze our mistakes because there’s no room for mistakes.
Mastery vs Perfection. From now on, shift your focus to Mastery, be kind to yourself, and analyze your failings to find that golden wisdom. Know that the perfect you is a never ending masterpiece that is continually being sculpted away. Always work on yourself and you’ll always be moving forward.
